Samford University’s Orlean Beeson School of Education held its annual awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 10.
Students from Human Development and Family Science, Teacher Education and Educational Leadership received awards honoring academic and character excellence and leadership, and were awarded scholarships that affirm these qualities.
“Our graduates lead classrooms, direct schools, advocate for families, conduct research, serve organizations, and implement positive change across the country and around the world. The students we honor are those who continue to meet and often surpass our expectations,” said Anna McEwan, dean of Orlean Beeson School of Education.
Donors who have faithfully given and worked to endow scholarships for the betterment of Samford and of the lives of students were also in attendance. During this year’s ceremony, a new scholarship, the Dr. Thomas E. Corts Memorial Scholarship, was presented. The scholarship was established in 2023 to support undergraduate students pursuing a calling to teach special education.
The names Tom and Marla Corts have been synonymous with Samford for four decades. Thomas E. Corts was known for his invaluable leadership, continual service, and love for books and classical literature. In 2011, the Tom and Marla Corts Distinguished Author Series was established to recognize the couple’s leadership to the university, the community and the cause of literacy. The Orlean Beeson School of Education proudly produces this annual event, hosting a visiting author who is not only a notable name in their field, but who challenges, inspires and expands the thinking of students to become more engaged in matters of significant intellectual or historical interest and vital issues of the day.
